Soekarno–Hatta International Airport started operations in 1985. Prior to this, Jakarta was served by two airports, Kemayoran Airport for most domestic flights and Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport for most international flights. The airport is named after the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta. Both men played a pivotal role in gaining independence for Indonesia from the Dutch.
Jakarta functions well as a cargo hub due to the high business ratings and this makes the city very popular for players operating a cargo airline, even rivallingKuala Lumpur and Singapore. However, the lower tourism ratings often put many players off making this place as their first hub. This makes the competition in Jakarta relatively mild compared to other similar cities. In addition, the city can sustain heavy competition for cargo routes, but only mild competition for passenger operations. Jakarta is also positioned in a slighted isolated location. While there exist many great destinations to fly to for both passenger and cargo routes to the north of the city (e.g. Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai and Taipei), there are few choices to choose from to the south of the city. As such, beginners are neither encouraged or discouraged from starting here and should instead consider this option carefully as the lack of competition can be an advantage, but the absence of an abundance of routes can set a budding airline back.
Soekarno–Hatta International Airport will often attain a high status of a level 7 or 8. Sometimes, the airport will attain maximum slot usage, but this will often take place late into the game. This makes the airport a good choice to consider only if all other better alternatives are no longer available for purchase. Additional airports may sometimes be needed whenever the principal airport is at full capacity, but this is best left for the national government as a second airport would usually never attain a status beyond a level 3 as the city is not super popular with many players.
Because cargo operations out of the city is very profitable due to the huge amount of cargo to be moved around in the city, medium to large capacity aircraft are recommended for flights to cities of any size depending o suitability. Great examples include the Boeing 767-300F, Airbus A310F, Boeing 777-F and the Airbus A330-200F. Avoid small capacity cargo planes as the huge cargo traffic will overwhelm the tiny capacity of the planes, which will lead to increased depreciation when multiple planes are needed. For passenger flights to medium to large sized cities, planes of medium capacity like the Boeing 767 and Airbus A300 are advised, while flights to small sized cities should utilise small capacity aircraft like the Airbus A320, Comac C919 and the Boeing 737.
