The name Suvarnabhumi was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The name means the "Golden Land" or "The Golden Kingdom", which is believed to exist somewhere in South-east Asia. The airport was only officially opened for most domestic and all international commercial flights on 28 September 2006. Prior to this, Bangkok was served by Don Mueang International Airport.
This large city will definitely attract many airlines to open a hub here or to fly here from many cities around the world. This leads to moderate to heavy competition, in which the city can sustain especially for passenger routes. Beginners with little experience in dealing with persistent competitors should avoid starting here. Bangkok's location does make it accessible to cities within Asia (e.g. Kuala Lumpur and Seoul) and Oceania (e.g. Sydney and Nadi), but flights to more profitable cities in Europe (e.g. Istanbul and Moscow) and North America (e.g. Los Angeles and Denver) will require long ranged aircraft to get to, which is not available so early in the game. Cargo operations in this city is not as popular compared to the passenger flights, but such flights still can make a decent income if managed properly. If competition gets to rough, players may opt to run monopolised routes from Bangkok to small to medium sized cities such as Kaoshiung, Hangzhou, Fukuoka and Tashkent since these routes tend to make better profits compared to competition filled routes to large cities.
Suvarnabhumi Airport will attain maximum slot capacity within 20 to 25 years into the game. Due to the huge demand for slots, additional airports are often needed. Buying the airport from the national government is a great move as there are massive profits in excess of 50,000k to be made to whoever owns the airport. However, constructing additional airports is not recommended and is best left for the national government as the status of second or third airports will often not go beyond a level 3 or 4 due to Bangkok not being too wildly popular with many players.
Bangkok's high tourism ratings makes this place a great place to make passenger routes out of. For the best aircraft to use when flying to and from medium and large cities are the large capacity aircraft with a high satisfaction like the Airbus A380, Boeing 747, Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 are suitable planes. Flights to smaller cities should utilise medium capacity planes such as the Boeing 767, Airbus A300 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Small capacity aircraft are best avoided in order to prevent a consistent 100% occupancy which requires multiple planes to alleviate, thereby increasing depreciation. For cargo flights to most cities of any size, small to medium capacity cargo planes like the Airbus A310F, Boeing 737F and the Antonov An-70 are good options.
